Nizhny Novgorod City Overview

Nizhny Novgorod, located where the Volga and Oka rivers meet some 260 miles east of Moscow, is an interesting mix of industry, history and modernization.

An important part of the Russian railway system, it has provided rail service to Moscow since the mid-1800s. You can also go the other way, continuing further east, taking the Trans-Siberian Railway to Siberia or Beijing.

Between 1932 and 1990, the city was called Gorky in honor of Maxim Gorky, the famous Russian novelist who was born there. Its Gorky Automobile plant, which still produces cars, was one of the largest manufacturers of military vehicles during the Soviet era. Because of that, the city was mostly closed off from tourists. But it's reopened and bustling.

One of Russia's largest cities with about 1.2 million people, it maintains its reputation as an industrial city as a manufacturer of cars, ships, machinery and diesel engines. Visitors will find a large metropolitan area with many museums and arts venues along both rivers.

The historical heart of Nizhny - as the city is commonly known - is its kremlin, a fortress built in the 1700s to protect its residents from invasion. The walled kremlin complex is big enough to be a city in a city. Visitors are welcome to visit its temple and museums and learn about the secrets and legends of its 13 towers.

Another must for visitors is walking up - and counting -- the Chkalov Staircase. Built in the 1940s, the stairs run from the embankment of the Volga River up to Minin Square, the center of the city.
